As the days get longer – and hopefully warmer – many of us are thinking about getting away for a few days. But it’s always a challenge deciding how to pack lightly and stylishly for a short break. We asked our Head of Design, Elizabeth, to create her ideal capsule wardrobes for two different getaways – a warm weather mini cruise and a city sight-seeing trip.
Maximum style for your mini cruise
“You don’t want to overpack, so the key thing is to choose clothes that you know will work with lots of outfits. Our tankini top is a great example. Of course, you can wear it for a swim or lazing by the pool, but it looks just as lovely worn with our Soft White Trousers for an elegant evening outfit”
Elizabeth’s quick packing tips for warm-weather breaks
- Decide on a simple colour palette, so that you can mix and match everything in your case.
- Choose lightweight fabrics and breathable natural fibres to keep you cool in warmer weather.
- A lightweight cover-up helps you change your look from poolside to beach bar in seconds – and takes up hardly any room in your bag.
Smart choices for your sight-seeing city break
“City breaks can be especially tricky, as you often don’t know what the weather will do. I recommend taking versatile separates, such as a travel suit, to give yourself lots of options.”
Elizabeth’s packing tips for seeing the sights
- Go for crease-free styles, so you can wear your outfits travelling and straight from your bag.
- Choose clothes that can be layered, so you have flexibility in any weather.
- Matching skirts and tops can be combined to give you the look of dress for an evening out.

You may have noticed that here at David Nieper we have a passion for natural fibres. Their lasting beauty is matched by their breathable comfort, and they have an almost magical ability to keep you warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s hot. So this summer, think about adding some splendid silk and pure, pristine cotton to your wardrobe.
Dress in cotton comfort
Nothing says summer like a light-as-air cotton dress. The cotton that we choose for your clothes is particularly special. Our buying teams select cotton from small, family-run mills in the foothills of the Alps. Their commitment to quality and time-honoured, traditional methods is in tune with our own values. We particularly love the unique way they ‘finish’ cotton fabrics by softening them in the pure-as-pure-can-be natural glacial water from the mountains. This Button-through Cotton Dress will feel airy and graceful on a warm day – the perfect way to stay elegant and unruffled as temperatures rise.
Supreme silk style
For an even more luxurious alternative, treat yourself to a pure silk dress. As a natural fibre, silk has all the same breathable and insulating properties as cotton, plus irresistible softness and splendour.
Don’t forget to add some cotton knitwear to your stylish summer wardrobe. Cotton yarn is ideal for cardigans and jumpers to keep on hand for when the sun has dipped below the horizon but you simply aren’t ready to go back indoors.
For a great night’s sleep
We recommend that you always choose natural fibres for your nightwear. Both woven and jersey cotton allow your body to breathe and maintain the cool temperature that’s necessary for unbroken sleep. On warm nights, woven cotton will help to keep you cool and comfortable. Jersey cotton is breathable too and has a lovely luxurious feel.
Natural fibres for travel
Perhaps you’re looking forward to getting away for a break. Once again, natural fibres should be at the top of your packing list. We are very fond of featherlight overshirts. They’re ideal for protecting sensitive shoulders in the midday sun – and they can transform a simple outfit into something rather special. Our Luxury Overshirt is a truly sumptuous blend of silk and cotton – or you could choose the Luxury Silk Overshirt and enjoy breathable comfort and subtly shimmering pure silk.

We’ve been making nightwear here in Derbsyhirefor over 55 years. In fact, nighties were the very first styles made by David Nieper when we were a fledgling company back in the 1960s. So we know what it takes to make nightdresses and pyjamas that look and feel lovely.
All our nightwear starts life on our pattern-cutting table. Each panel is cut generously for comfort before being passed to the sewing room.
Of course, every style is different, but usually the first step is to make the front and back yokes which are gently gathered for a roomy fit. We often design our nighties with gathered sleeves too, because they give you space to move freely throughout the night.
We stitch the panels of fabric together using thread that’s thicker than ordinary cotton, so the nightdress or pyjamas will last through wash after wash, and there will be a comfortable amount of ‘give’ to the seams.
It’s really important to get the hems right. If the hem isn’t exactly the right depth, or if it’s uneven, the nightie won’t hang properly. So we rely on the skill of our team to get it spot on, every time.
Little details are often at the heart of our nightwear designs. The daisies on our ever-popular Soft Jersey Cotton Nightdress are attached by a very skilled seamstress who has to feed the daisy ribbon through at exactly the right tension to ensure they’re applied at exactly the right distance apart. We designed this particular style back in 1989 and it’s still a customer favourite.
Stitching the authentic Leavers lace onto our Woven Cotton Sleeveless Nightie is another tricky job that is undertaken by our most experienced dressmakers. We take special care to choose the softest, most intricate lace made by a family of lacemakers on the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border. It must lie smoothly and evenly against the woven cotton fabric to ensure you get a beautiful finish and unrivalled comfort.
Our attention to detail doesn’t stop at the sewing room door. Every garment is double checked to ensure it’s absolutely perfect, before being pressed by hand and lovingly packed for you.
The royal wedding is now just around the corner and here at David Nieper, we wish Prince Harry and Meghan a long and happy future together. But there’s no doubt that beautiful Ms Markle won’t be this summer’s only bride. So, inspired by a royal romance, here are some of our favourite outfits – for every kind of wedding.
Choose flowers for church – If you’re off to a wedding in a church or country house – or if you’re attending a marquee reception – feminine, floral dreses are ideal. They have a cheerful and celebratory feel to them, so they set just the right tone. Choose a dress made in premium jersey, such as our Elegant Occasion Dress, to give you day-long comfort, no matter how much dining, dancing or socialising you enjoy. Viscose jersey is particularly silky and feels blissfully soft against the skin.
Look smart in separates – If you’re going to a wedding at a chic hotel, or a more low-key celebration, think co-ordinating separates. They look elegant, but not too formal, and you can dress them up or down with jewellery and accessories to match your personal style. The sumptuously soft fabric of our Uncrushable Blouse and Crease-free Crepe Skirt always looks flawless.
For a classic look add a tailored jacket to a Luxury Jersey Dress for all-day comfort and style. Our Uncrushable Occasion Jacket is a delightfully versatile choice. You can wear it with so many things in your wardrobe – not just for weddings, but for christenings and garden parties too. This season, we’re ringing the changes with our Smart Occasion Jacket, which has a contemporary, textured look.
Whatever you choose to wear, remember the main thing is to enjoy the happy occasion and have fun. We hope you have a fabulous time.

Pam Ayres is a writer, broadcaster and all round national treasure. She has been at the top of her game for over four decades and is one of the UK’s most popular female entertainers.
Pam has been a David Nieper customer for many years and we recently got in touch with her, to find out about some of her favourite styles.
Our design team were delighted to know that Pam enjoys wearing our tunics; they have always been a firm customer favourite.
David Nieper tunics are cut slightly longer than those you’ll find elsewhere – and we usually style with a three-quarter length sleeve, as it’s a flattering length that elongates the appearance of your arms and slims the silhouette.
We choose fabrics and prints with care so that your tunic will work just as well with smart or casual trousers.
Pam will be wearing one of our tunics later this month on Channel 4’s Celebrity Countdown show, while she’s raising money for her beloved hedgehog charity. Make sure you tune in, and good luck Pam!
